Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Fry amassed an impressive record in junior golf, before attending the University of Arizona from 1980-83. As a member of the university golf team he shot a course record 64 at Randolph Park Golf Course in Tucson. He set another course record while home on vacation, with a 62 at Minor Park Golf Course.
As Fry developed his competitive golfing skills at college, he also started to develop a keen interest in the design of golf courses from the player’s perspective. He made the acquaintance of Andy Banfield, a lead designer for Tom Fazio. This introduction gave rise to Fry’s career in golf course design, starting as a shaper at Fazio Design.
In 1988, after five years with Fazio, Dana Fry was welcomed into the firm of Hurdzan Design, where he became a full partner with Hurdzan in 1997. The Hurdzan/Fry partnership continued until 2012, when Fry and Jason Straka (a Hurdzan/Fry lead designer) set-up their own firm, Fry/Straka Design.
