Hansen became the first Danish player ever to win the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit. This was largely but not exclusively achieved on the strength of his performances in Sunshine Tour events co-sanctioned with the European Tour.
In 2015, aged 45, Hansen decided to call it a day on his 20-year professional career, and announced his retirement as a full-time touring professional. In addition to his three European Tour victories, other career highlights included representing Denmark eight times in the World Cup of Golf and Europe twice in the Seve Trophy. In the 2011 US PGA Championship he finished just 1 shot away from joining Keegan Bradley and Jason Dufner in a playoff.
