Machynys (Monk's Island course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 2005

Machynys, Monk's Island course (originally known as Machynys Peninsula Golf & Country Club): This beautifully sculpted links golf course may have been created by Nicklaus Design in 2005, but once you've played your way round, you'll feel that it could just as easily have been around since 1905 or even earlier.

On this very open terrain on the edge of Carmarthen Bay, all the great links features are present, with perhaps more in the way of water hazards than on the average links (compensating for the lack of towering sand dunes). The front-nine is played on the landward side of the clubhouse (and takes you down towards Llanelli's tinplate rolling-mill), the back-nine is played on the seaward side, with wonderful views onto the bay and across to the Gower Peninsula.

Throughout, the square tee-boxes, large greens, great bunkering and gently rolling fairways all create a thoroughly authentic links feel, and just like any links course, the deep rough is better not messed with. Yet another excellent and relatively recent addition to golf in South Wales.

Did you know?

In its first year of opening (2005) Machynys Peninsula (as it was then known) hosted the Ladies European Tour's Championship of Europe (see Tournaments section). Nearby Llanelli is home to one of Wales greatest rugby teams, the Llanelli Scarlets, who play at the famous Strady Park stadium. The team's vivid red strip, is clearly reflected on the scorecard and promotional literature of Machynys Monk's Island.
