Valhalla
Valhalla Golf Club is home to one of the top-rated and finest championship golf courses in Kentucky. Quietly located 20 miles to the east of Louisville, this excellent tree-lined and open parkland layout contains a wealth of wonderfully crafted, memorable and challenging holes.
Flowing around the course is the small Floyds Fork river (see Did You Know section). On the front-nine, at the par-3 3rd, doglegging par-4 6th, water-protected par-5 7th and par-4 9th you will need to hit over Floyds Fork, or surrender your ball to the river, as many have done.
The river continues its journey past the course on the back-nine. Here it's a tributary (Brush Run) that takes on the mantle of posing a watery threat, while adorning the course with a few cascading waterfalls (at the island green par-4 13th, par-4 15th, and par-5 18th).
Added to abundant water hazards, there's also plenty of large stylish bunkering to be avoided. This revered Jack Nicklaus layout will most assuredly challenge your all-round game, as it does the world's best professionals, who have contested many a top-level championship here.
Limited access: this private course is generally playable only by members and their invited guests.
Private club; guests may only play if hosted by a member. An outside visitor tee-time may occasionally be granted on application to the club.
Walking permitted.
Good
Described in Norse (Scandinavian) mythology, Valhalla is a great and majestic hall where the souls of Viking warriors feasted and celebrated with the gods. As legend has it, the hall is presided over by Odin. Half the Vikings who die in combat enter Valhalla; the other half, it is said, join the goddess Freyja in Fólkvangr.
Since its opening in 1986, Valhalla has played host to many top level tournaments and major championships, most especially the 2008 Ryder Cup, and several US PGA and Senior PGA championships (see our Tournaments section >by Venue >Valhalla).
Wrapped around the Valhalla course is Floyds Fork, a 62-mile tributary of Kentucky's Salt River, which itself is a 150-mile tributary of the much larger Ohio River. The Ohio is the main river flowing past Louisville, and the largest tributary (by volume) of the mighty Mississippi.
Kentucky's No.1 course (Golf Digest, 2023/24).
USA's 87th best course (Golf Digest, 2023).
