Silvies Valley Ranch
The Retreat at Silvies Valley Ranch: a three-hour drive east from Bend doesn't make it the easiest Oregon golf venue to get to. But if you should make the journey here, you'll find plenty to keep your golfing appetite satisfied.
The main course is an intriguing "reversible" layout, which provides two distinctive 18-hole courses, the clockwise Craddock course, and anti-clockwise Hankins course. This throwback to the origins of golf (at least at St Andrews) is a concept seemingly gaining in popularity. There's also a seven-hole short course (McVeigh's Gauntlet), nine-hole par-3 course (Chief Egan) and an 18-hole reversible putting course (Claire's course).
Essentially the championship golf comes in the form of two 18-hole layouts (Craddock and Hankins) that utilise many of the same fairway landing areas before arriving at their respective 18 greens. To make this work there are actually a total of 27 greens, 18 of which are used for each course. The two different routings (Craddock and Hankins) are in-play on alternate days.
Having fun is the main objective here, rather than offering you 36 holes of uber-challenging penal golf. Laid out on a 144,000-acre cattle and goat ranch, the course plays to good-width fairways, with its main challenges reserved for your approach play to the large undulating greens.

The Silvies name is derived from Antonine Sylvaille, a French trapper who discovered the valley in the early 1800s. The Craddock course is named after John “Jake” Craddock and his four sons, who settled and consolidated much of the Silvies Valley. The Hankins course honours the pioneering Hankins clan who homesteaded much of the ranch.
McVeigh’s Gauntlet itakes its name from Myles McVeigh, an early pioneer who homesteaded in the Silvies Valley; he was a drinking friend of the Craddocks and Hankins. Chief Egan, the last warrior chief of the Paiute tribe gives his name to the Par-3 course here.
Circling round the lower half of Otter lake, Claire's putting course is named after Claire Owens, reputedly the first woman to play golf in Silvies Valley (on Myles McVeigh's course).
