Ekwanok takes its name from a Native American Indian word meaning "the very top" or the "place where the very top is." In 1914 Ekwanok hosted the US Amateur Championship won by Francis Ouimet, who the year before had won the US Open Championship at The Country Club, Brookline, Boston.
