Sand Hills
The private Sand Hills Golf Club is home to a championship golf course that ranks with the world's best. Here, in what many would described as the "middle of nowhere", you'll find one of the United States's most admired open links-style layouts.
The "minimalist" design by Coore & Crenshaw, laid out on sandy rolling terrain, fits perfectly with the expansive natural surroundings of the Nebraska sandhills. Water hazards don't play any part here. But sandy waste areas flanking the generous fairways, stylish rustic bunkering, and large undulating greens, are plentiful.
Space here is not a problem. You'll find the clubhouse sitting on the North Fork of the Dismal River, over a mile away from the course itself. With reputedly no more than 200 members (who are spread across the United States), the course doesn't see too many rounds each day.
Limited access: this private course is generally playable only by members and their invited guests.
Private club; visitors/guests may only play if hosted by a member.
Good
Nebraska's Sand Hills, which cover the north-central part of the "Cornhusker State", comprise a vast area of rolling mixed-grass prairie. Although unsuitable for arable farming, the late 1800s saw the establishment of cattle ranching as the main economic activity. The towns in the region, like nearby Mullen (pop. 500), tend to be small population centres.
Nebraska's No.1 course (Golf Digest, 2023/24).
USA's 8th best course (Golf Digest, 2023).
World's 11th best course (GOLF Magazine, 2023/24).
