Arcadia Bluffs (Bluffs)
Arcadia Bluffs Golf Club: Located directly alongside Lake Michigan, Arcadia Bluffs is a wonderful example of the new breed of top-quality "retro-links" golf courses. These inspiring and headline-grabbing layouts replicate "seaside golf as it used to be". The golf course and onsite facilities puts this superb Stay&Play venue in the same elevated league as the likes of Whistling Straits, Bandon Dunes and Canada's Cabot Links.
Played through huge fescue-covered sand hills, the layout is as authentic and inspiring as any of the modern designs that tip their hats to the links courses of old. In an environment where busy roads and housing play no part, all the key characteristics of a great links course are here in abundance. Laid out on open undulating treeless terrain, the good-width slivers of fairway are routed through towering himalayan dunes. Sod-faced revetted bunkers, large sandy waste areas and expansively undulating greens support the overall links-style character of Arcadia Bluffs.
From the Lodge and clubhouse, and just about every hole on the course, you enjoy wonderful vistas onto mighty Lake Michigan. Although a relatively recent addition, Arcadia Bluffs is a pure links layout, offering all the thrills and spills of duneland "seaside golf", and then some.
Starting the back-nine loop, the par-4 10th and par-5 11th take you lakewards from the impressive red-roofed clubhouse. Both these holes will feel a little tighter than much of the front-nine, as they wriggle downhill between the dunes.
Pick of the holes: at the par-4 12th you play along the shoreline, albeit perched on the bluffs a couple of hundred feet above the lake (the far-side of which lies a mere 50 miles to the west).
