The Highland Course at Primland Resort

5-star: Fabulous – courses don’t get much better than this.

Est. 2006

The Highland Course at Primland Resort: this stunningly natural, quiet and scenic golf course commands fabulous views over the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia. In the forefront, the pyramid-shaped Pinnacle of Dan.

While a host of designers considered building the course at a much lower level on this huge property, Donald Steel was convinced the spectacular mountain top views had to play their full part. As such Steel's excellently crafted design sits alongside the luxury Lodge at Primland's highest elevation. From the Lodge and the golf course the vistas are spectacular.

With its mix of woodland stretches and more open terrain, the generally good-width rolling fairways wend their way across this mountain top retreat in two nine-hole loops. Water hazards don't feature at all in the layout, and you can definitely forget roads and housing. From the gatehouse to the golf course it's a mere six-mile drive through pristine woodland.

Steel's layout includes 18 wonderfully varied golf holes, stylish but not excessive bunkering, large undulating greens and several precipitous drop-offs into heavily wooded valleys. Good ball striking is demanded from the tee, not least on the closing par-4-5-4 stretch. This final and gloriously scenic trio all dogleg left to right; a "baby fade" on each hole will serve you well.

Pick of the holes: the first six holes, which include three par-5s and two par-3s are fabulous scene setters. From there on the immaculately presented course continues to sweep you along with many wonderful lookouts on the way. The long downhill par-3 8th is many people's favourite. But, perhaps the best hole (and view) is saved 'til last, with a spectacular vista awaiting at the 18th tee. Primland's impressive Lodge (complete with it's deep-space observatory-silo) looks down on proceedings as you putt-out on the final expansive green.

Did you know?

Primland is named after its founder, Frenchman Didier Primat, the grandson of Marcel Schlumberger, one of the founders of the Schlumberger oil field services company. Didier Primat, who had a net worth of £3 billion when he died in 2008, bought approximately 12,000 acres of land in Meadows of Dan, Virginia in 1977. The site, now known as Primland, was used for hunting, fishing, horseback riding and other recreational activities. The golf course was built in 2005/06.

In 2013 Primland joined five other prestigious world-renowned golf clubs and competed for the annual Tavistock Cup (see our Tournaments section >by Tournament >Tavistock Cup). Primland was represented by Fred Couples, Bill Haas, Jay Haas & Webb Simpson, with the team coming a creditable third. The winners, after a playoff were Albany, Bahamas. The other teams competing were: Lake Nona, Orlando; Isleworth, Orlando; Oak Tree Natl, Oklahoma; Queenwood, London. The low round prize went to Webb Simpson.

Published ranking

Virginia's 4th best course (Golf Digest, 2023/24).
USA's 155th best course, and 25th best public access course (Golf Digest, 2023).
