In the early 2000s, Virginia Tech alumnus and philanthropists Bill Goodwin and his wife, Alice, asked their friend, Pete Dye, to consider converting the existing River Course into a world class layout. Through the Goodwin’s generosity and the creativity of Pete Dye, Virginia Tech gained a much improved facility that would serve the university community, the golfing public, and provide a home for the university golf team (the "Hokies").
