Carter Plantation Golf Club

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 2003

Carter Plantation Golf Club: The first signature golf course design by native Louisianan David Toms - laid out in the attractive and quiet woodland environment of a historic plantation home. This excellent Stay&Play venue is one of the standard bearers for the Audubon Golf Trail.

The "low profile" simplicity of this well-crafted design, absent of tricked-up, weak or gimmicky holes, disguises its undoubted challenges. A backdrop of tall pines and cypresses, set against Louisiana swamp, creates a predominantly natural feel to the front-nine, while the back-nine is more noticeably flanked by housing.

Although relatively flat, with gently rippling fairways, there is plenty of stylish bunkering and an array of small ponds, that will need to be avoided. Pot bunkers as well as high-lipped, more expansive sand traps defend the often large and extravagantly sloping greens.

Slick run-off areas will carry your ball down and away from the putting surfaces, while dark, silent pools lie in wait beside some of the nicely elevated greens. Accurate shots will be needed into the pudding-bowl greens at the par-3 3rd and 12th holes.

Pick of the holes: an enchanting woodland backdrop and tee-to-green shot across water, arguably makes the 5th the best of the par-3s. Occupying a more open setting, the near-island green of the 17th also creates a memorable "short" hole. The long-par-5 13th finishes opposite the 17th in this more airy and spacious setting, the same small lake menacingly lurking at the back and leftside of the 13th green.

Did you know?

Carter Plantation is a member of Louisiana's Audubon Golf Trail. The Trail was established in 2001, and includes 18 of the best public-access courses in the state. [See our entry for Audubon Park (Did You Know section) for a list of the Audubon Golf Trail courses].

Carter Plantation dates from 1804, when James Rheims acquired the acreage in a Spanish land grant. The plantation property was acquired by George Richardson in 1856, and lived in by his daughter Amanda who was married to Judge Marcus T. Carter.

The property continued, sometimes through the female line, in the Carter family for seven generations. The house itself (a smallish white building that stands behind the driving range) is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is a beautiful representative of a middle class plantation home.
