Tiburón Golf Club (Black course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 2001

Tiburón Golf Club (Black course): Tiburón enjoys two excellent and challenging golf courses laid out by Greg Norman. Some might regard the Black course as second-in-line to the Gold layout, but don't be fooled into thinking that it's any less challenging. In fact quite the opposite. The Black also lays down a stern test.

The early stretches of this out-and-back layout are routed through natural wetland forest. The par-4 second hole presents as tight a drive as you'll face anywhere in southern Florida - from the back tees a nerve-jangling experience. The tight opening (and closing) holes are complemented by a more open but no less forgiving middle section.

Although more open, the mid-section brings water firmly into the picture, with several small lakes and ponds threatening alongside the fairways and dangerously defending many of the large and subtly sloping greens. Beware the slick run-offs around the greens that can transport your ball away from the putting surface and into a variety of swales and hollows, or worse.

As on the Gold course, the fairways are firm and fast, generally quite tight, and not bordered by conventional rough. Where the fairways run out, water, coquina shell waste areas, steep-lipped bunkers and deep vegetation lie in wait. There is a more natural, but tighter feel to much of the excellently maintained Black course.

Stay&Play: luxury onsite accommodation is available in the Ritz-Carlton hotel (see Where2Stay section below).

Did you know?

With two courses designed by Greg Norman (alias the Great White Shark), and a club logo that incorporates a shark's fin, it is no surprise to discover that "tiburón" is the Spanish word for shark.

Designated a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary by Audubon International, Tiburón is dedicated to protecting and enhancing its natural surroundings.

Tiburon, and especially the Gold course, is no stranger to hosting top level tournament golf. Both the men's PGA Tour (The Shootout) and women's LPGA Tour (Tour Championship) have been regular visitors here. The Shootout is a PGA Tour sanctioned event founded by Greg Norman in 1989 for the benefit of children's charities. (See our Tournaments section >by Venue >Tiburon).
