The Palmer Course at PGA National

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1984

The Palmer Course at PGA National: Designed by and dedicated to the legend whose name it bears, the Palmer course is one of five 18-hole layouts here at PGA National. Originally known as the General course, this out-and-back layout is often cited as the favourite of many PGA National members.

The holes follow the design of many classic links courses; nine holes take you on a sweeping journey out and away from the clubhouse; running alongside them, nine inward holes bring you steadily back to where your round started. The outward-inward pairs of holes are routed through residential developments, with the holes and housing often separated by attractive ponds; rarely is the housing in-range. A wonderful line of large banyan trees separate the 1st and 18th fairways, elsewhere palms and oaks also feature.

Pristinely presented (in keeping with PGA National's high presentation standards), the layout effortlessly blends rippling tree-lined fairways with rock-fronted and reed-lined water features, attractive wetland areas and plenty of stylish bunkering. The immaculate, though often not overly large greens are wonderfully testing.

Although laid out on flattish terrain, the course is nonetheless full of variety and golfing challenges. The layout finishes in real style with a long 601-yard par-5, which eventually reaches a green precariously located alongside PGA National's largest lake, and across from the impressive clubhouse. As a resort-style course, The Palmer at PGA National is one of the most attractive you'll find.

Did you know?

The Palmer course, formerly known as The General, was named in honour of Arnold Palmer, the charismatic leader (or General) of his loyal and devoted fan base ... Arnie's Army. As time progressed all involved in the game came to recognise him as The King, an iconic force who created a tidal wave of passion and interest in the game. More than any other individual in the 1950s and 60s, Palmer galvanised people into picking-up a golf club and trying golf for the first time. Tiger Woods picked-up Palmer's mantle in the late-1990s and beyond.
