Golden Bear, Keene's Pointe
The Golden Bear Club at Keene's Pointe: Originally a semi-private course and now fully private, this relatively recent addition to the panoply of excellent courses in central Florida, bears all the hallmarks of a top-quality Nicklaus design.
Although occupying the relatively flat terrain of a "lakeland" residential community that borders the Butler Chain of Lakes, the skilfully crafted design is both absorbing and challenging. Nicklaus's trademark deployment of bunkers, both large and small, combines with the presence of many small lakes and ponds to ensure your golfing skills are thoroughly tested. Good and accurate shot-making is rewarded here, while wayward big-hitting will be suitably penalised.
The firm, well-paced greens are usually elevated, which has allowed for the "excavation" of some seriously deep and testing greenside bunkers. The front bunker guarding the 17th green is deep enough to rival some of the most serious sand traps found on the links courses of Scotland. The difficulty factor around the greens at Keene's Point is tempered by good-width fairways, which weave their way through this residential community, the housing generally set well back, and rarely in harm's way.
You will appreciate the quietness of this residential-rural area throughout your round, and enjoy a pleasant view out across Lake Burden at the par-4 4th. However, any thoughts that your whole round will be played through a pristine wilderness area will be short-lived. Most of this attractive and well-crafted course is routed through Keene Point's upmarket housing.
The Golden Bear Club at Keene's Pointe is a private club. Guests may only play if hosted by a member.
Non-metal spike facility.
