PGA Golf Club (Dye)
PGA Golf Club (Dye course): Just off I-95 above Port St Lucie you'll find the PGA Golf Club and its three excellent championship courses. This fabulous triumvirate, comprising two layouts by Tom Fazio (the Ryder and Wanamaker) and one by Pete Dye, are owned and operated by the PGA of America.
The out-and-back designed Dye course, is the youngest and arguably most natural and exciting of the three layouts. With a halfway house out at the 10th tee (the 12th hole also starts there) this wonderfully testing layout has a distinctly Scottish, linksy character.
Plenty of sandy waste areas skirt the fairways and Dye's trade-mark variety of bunkering includes some of the tiniest pot bunkers you'll ever see. Water threatens occasionally but not as much as on many other Dye designs.
The beautifully crafted holes wind their way through the expansive Big Mamu wetlands. Around the greens a wonderful array of mounds, craters, bunkers and slick run-offs will test your full short-game repertoire. The greens are typically large and extravagantly sloping.
From the tee you'll be aiming to hit the immaculately presented, nicely rolling, crisp-turf fairways, while you also get a chance to admire the many handsome features of each well-crafted hole. Although generally quite open, tall pines create an elegant backdrop to many greens, as at the long par-3 16th. The holes around the turn pick up some traffic noise from nearby I-95, the only minor distraction on this wonderful layout.
