Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club (Island course): Of the "Perfect Four" courses at Innisbrook, many would say the Island puts up an even tougher challenge than its more renowned stablemate, the Copperhead. Often tighter and more technically demanding, the Island course takes its name from the final hole - a wonderful doglegging, shortish par-4, which requires a well-judged approach shot onto an island green.

This very natural championship layout, from which real estate is rarely seen, splendidly winds its way through a scenic cypress swamp. Many tree-lined holes are complemented by others flanked by water. On the front-nine the par-4 1st, par-5 2nd, stunning par-3 4th (Lone Cypress) and long par-5 7th are all bordered by beautiful Lake Innisbrook.

Most of the elevation changes (less pronounced than on Copperhead), come in the middle section of the layout, starting at the snaking uphill par-5 7th. This signature hole climbs its way past cypress and pine trees to an elevated, but not overly large green.

The back-nine loop of holes starts with the long par-4 10th, which demands a long carry over water before finding the safety of the fairway. The hole takes you all the way up to 75 feet above sea level, reputedly the highest point in western Florida. Your descent back down comes at another beautifully crafted and stylishly bunkered hole, the long par-4 11th, which measures over 500 yards from the back tees.

As you meander through a mix of woodland and wetland environments, the Island's strong credentials as a sanctuary for birdlife and other indigenous wildlife are clear to see. And as a test of golf, the layout is up there with the best in Florida.
