The Golf Club at Bluewater Bay

3-star: Good course – an enjoyable test for your game.

Est. 1981

The Golf Club at Bluewater Bay (formerly Bluewater Bay Golf Resort), was, for most of its life a well-regarded 36-hole layout, comprising the Bay, Marsh, Lake and Magnolia nines. It seems Bluewater Bay now operates as an 18-hole facility, with just the Bay and Marsh nines remaining open. They were always the "preferred" nines. Further reports suggest even these two nine hole loops are not being as well maintained as in the club's 36-hole heyday.

The Bay/Marsh pairing maximises the spectacular views out onto Choctawhatchee Bay, giving you bayside holes on each nine. The par-3 4th (Marsh) and par-4 6th (Bay) are the pick of these holes, their putting greens sit alongside the shoreline of the immensely scenic Bay.

Much of the time the layout quietly weaves its way through the resort community, with small lakes and ponds often in play, especially on the Marsh nine. An attractive array of oak and pine trees flank most holes, ensuring the housing is set well enough back to be out of harm's way.

Laid out on flattish terrain, the pleasant mix of straightaway and doglegging holes provide a good golfing challenge, without being overly mounded or bunkered along the fairways. This classic, older style community course certainly has its moments, not least on those four or five occasions when you get to look out across the Bay.

Did you know?

Bluewater Bay is located on the north shore of the expansive Choctawhatchee Bay, which appeared on early Spanish, French, and English charts as St Rose's Bay or Santa Rosa Bay. The 140-mile Choctawhatchee River flows down from southern Alabama and empties into the Bay, along with several other smaller rivers and streams. The name Choctawhatchee simply means "River of the Choctaws".
