Disney's Palm
Disney's Palm Golf Course: Not unsurprisingly, Disney's Palm Course takes its name from the liberal sprinkling of palm trees dotted around this enjoyable layout. Together with the neighbouring Magnolia Course, the Palm formerly co-hosted the annual visit of the PGA Tour to Walt Disney World.
In 2013 Arnold Palmer Design conducted an extensive revamp of the Palm, building new green complexes, re-shaping tees, and creating a new bunker design that has modernised this historic Joe Lee design. Always a pleasing layout, the Palm roams through contrasting open and wooded environments.
The front-nine starts out alongside the Shades of Green Resort (for military personnel), with some early holes running parallel to Floridian Way, one of the resort's well known thoroughfares. Here a bit of traffic noise might be joined by the revving of engines from the nearby race car circuit. At the seriously water protected par-4th 6th, you turn away from the road and head into a more natural, wooded and quieter section of the course.
Pick of the holes: the best stretch of holes comes in the most open section of the layout, the mid-section of the back-nine. From the par-4 13th through to the par-3 16th, the holes wriggle their way between four good size ponds; water and fairway seem to confront you in equal measure. Among many excellent holes on this closing stretch, the par-5 14th and par-3 16th will test your golfing nerve, with water a serious threat from tee to green on both of them.
