Cabot Citrus Farms (Barrens course)

5-star: Fabulous – courses don’t get much better than this.

Est. 1993

Cabot Citrus Farms (Barrens course): Until recently the two Tom Fazio-designed courses here were known as World Woods Golf Club. Under new owners, Ben Cowan-Dewar and Mike Keiser, both layouts underwent major redesigns in the early 2020's. Not only sporting stylistic changes, they also emerged from the process with a new name, Cabot Citrus Farms.

What hasn't changed at Cabot Citrus Farms is the wonderfully natural and forested setting. Cabot Barrens remains the higher rated of the two layouts, maintaining a handsomely rugged appearance. The generous width fairways are flanked, as before, by copious quantities of bunkering and sandy waste areas.

Now part of the Cabot collection of high-end golf destinations, the Cabot Barrens course (formerly Pine Barrens) and Cabot Oaks (formerly Rolling Oaks) have become stablemates with a distinguished international cadre of Cabot properties. These include, Cabot golf locations in Canada (Cape Breton and BC), the Caribbean (St Lucia), and Scotland (Highlands). Here alongside Florida's Big Bend coast, the two original and much changed World Woods courses also acquired a new sibling, in the form of the "The 21" ... an inventive and unconventional 21-hole Mike Nuzzo design.

Did you know?

Ben Cowan-Dewar, Canadian businessman and visionary golf developer, is the co-founder and CEO of Cabot. He teamed-up with Mike Keiser (of Bandon Dunes fame), to create Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs on a former mining site in Nova Scotia, breathing much needed new life into the local economy in the process. The two entrepeneurs continued their association to expand Cabot into today's international collection of high-end golf properties.

At the last count, the Cabot collection includes: Cabot Cape Breton (Links and Cliffs courses), Cabot St Lucia (Point Hardy Golf Club; opens 2023), Cabot Revelstoke, British Columbia (opens 2025), Cabot Highlands, Scotland (existing Castle Stewart course, and a second course in the pipeline), and now the Barrens and Oaks courses at Cabot Citrus Farms, Florida.

Perhaps uniquely in golf, a fourball group playing the drivable par-4 15th on the Barrens course, recorded scores of 1, 2, 3 & 4 on this hole. The ace was followed by the eagle, then the birdie and then the par. The last player was under enormous pressure to sink his 7-foot putt for par and allow the group to record this remarkable achievement.
