Black Bear, FL
Black Bear Golf Club: Located to the north and east of Eustis, less than an hours' drive from the centre of Orlando, Black Bear is a big, expansive, gently rolling golf course. Laid out in an open, almost treeless environment, creates a linksy feel to the layout. Although part of a residential development, the housing is not at all intrusive and always set well back from the holes.
Water does not put in too many appearances at Black Bear, but certainly plays its part at the closing par-4 18th, flanking the leftside of the fairway and protecting the front and rightside of the green. There's several huge greens to contend with; measuring more than 50 yards from front to back at the 1st, 11th, 13th and 18th holes.
The quiet environment of this former orange plantation is home to many nicely undulating, open fairways, flanked by TPC-style, smooth, rolling earthmounds. A great course for big-hitters who will be encouraged by the generally good-width fairways and not overly penal rough. Plenty of large, expansive bunkering, adds to the challenges and excellent quality feel of Black Bear.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance.
Non-metal spike facility. Golf carts compulsory.
Excellent
This area of central Florida is still home to the shy and secretive Florida black bear, hence the golf course's name. Very occasionally a bear has been seen taking an early morning stroll along the fairways.
