Travelling north from Myrtle Beach on US Hwy 17 : just before the South Carolina / North Carolina border, you will meet the junction of Hwy 17 and route 179 (Beach Drive SW to Calabash). Take the 179 to Calabash. After approx 3 miles, at traffic lights in Calabash, continue straight over into Old Georgetown Road SW (still on the 179). After o.7 miles turn right into the Pearl Golf Links, and follow road for approx o.8 miles to clubhouse.
Pearl Golf Links
The Pearl Golf Links: once a 36-hole golf facility, The Pearl now offers 27 holes of Dan Maples-designed championship golf. Holes 3 thru' 11 of the former East course, the tightest and most heavily tree-lined holes at The Pearl, were those left out of the new 27-hole set-up. Holes 1 and 2, and 12 thru' 18 of the original East course are now known as Pearl's East-nine.
The front-nine of the former West course, which remains more open and some would say easier going than the tree-lined East, is now called the North-nine. The West's back-nine now forms The Pearl's West-nine. Few locations in the Myrtle Beach area can boast championship golf to match the naturalness and challenge of the Pearl Golf Links.
The East-nine still offers relatively narrow tree-lined avenues, with back-to-back par-3s at holes 2 and 3. The third hole still plays alongside a wide creek, with water to be crossed in front of the green; a Monet-like bridge gets you onto the green. The much-admired 16th and 17th holes look out onto the wetlands of the Calabash River, with Oyster Bay Golf Club away on the opposite bank.
Whereas the East-nine will test your game in pristine woodland, the West-nine has a more open parkland character. It too has a wonderful stretch of holes, 15 thru' 18, where the Calabash River plays its part. The double-doglegging par-5 18th is threateningly flanked by a wide creek (a Calabash tributary), which needs to be crossed in front of the green.
The North-nine, without any riverside holes, combines elements of the East-nine's woodland character with the West's more open style. Throughout, the greens at The Pearl are a good-size without being over-sized, and are generally protected by one or two large bunkers to left or right.

Good
One can't be certain where the name Pearl Golf Links originated, but with the nearby Calabash River supporting vast oyster beds, perhaps one or two of their pearly contents might have surfaced as the golf courses were under construction?
