Stono Ferry, The Links at
The Links at Stono Ferry: there's an abundance of good golf here at Stono Ferry, and plenty of scenery and history as well. The memorable back-nine takes you out to the banks of the wide and impressive Stono River; certainly a step up from the solid but less scenic front-nine.
The river puts in its first appearance just after you pass a canon on the 12th fairway, a memorial to the Battle of Stono Ferry (see Did You Know section below). A knee-trembling drive at the excellent riverside par-4 13th is followed by the signature par-3 14th. This wonderful short hole is played from the jetty of a former river crossing, and requires a 150-yard shot across a slice of the river and onto a green, stoutly protected by trees left and right.
The drama and history of the back-nine is not quite matched by the relatively flat, though pleasant and "openly" wooded front-nine. There are several quite tight drives to make along the way, while Stono's gently undulating greens sometimes present small targets, often defended by good bunkering and swampy water hazards.
Carding a good score at Stono Ferry will be a factor of well-placed accurate drives, backed up with accurate approach play ... not least at the short par-4 18th, with its island green. If your game is not fully cooperating with this scoring strategy, then just soak up the delights of the back-nine, with its wonderful river holes and views, and a history tour thrown in for free!

Excellent
The attractions of The Links at Stono Ferry are not just limited to the golf itself, but during your round, and on the back-nine especially, there are several sites of historical interest. A canon and a redoubt at the 12th hole are remnants of the Battle of Stono Ferry, fought in 1779 between the Americans and the ruling British forces.
This American Revolutionary battle claimed the lives of 149 British soldiers and 153 American Patriots, included among them was Hugh Jackson, older brother of President Andrew Jackson.
At the 13th hole a plaque explains that a section of the current cart path actually lies on top of the old Charleston - Savannah railroad, which was established in the 1850s and was the main lifeline between these two great southern cities. The railway was abandoned in the 1960s.
The land around the 14th tee was the base for the Stono Ferry Crossing to John's Island. It was also the site of fortifications used during the American Revolution and the Civil War.
