St James Plantation (The Players Club)

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1997

St James Plantation (The Players Club): If you can drag yourself away from the busier and brasher golfing hubbub of Myrtle Beach, then St James Plantation, with its four excellent championship courses is a great destination to sample.

The Players Club is the Plantation's best in terms of a classically wooded, picturesque and excellently presented layout. Many wonderfully crafted holes occupy the mainly pine-forested environment, which is intertwined with swampy wetland and small ponds that come into play on about half the holes.

On several occasions, this natural woodland-wetland environment, helped along by Tim Cate's terrific bunkering and use of large sandy waste areas, serves up golf holes of the very highest calibre. The par-3 7th for example is as good a par-3 as you'll find on any Lowcountry golf course ... or just make that any golf course, period. Holes like the par-4 12th and par-5 15th (along with several others) wouldn't look at all out of place at say Wentworth in England, although the occasional wetland carries (rather than heather) mark these out as classic Carolina fare.

With large and sometimes very large, undulating and immaculate greens, be prepared for a thorough examination of your putting skills. Real estate comes into the picture from time-to-time, but is never allowed to steal the show or detract from the visual enjoyment, naturalness and playability of this top-quality layout.
