Port Royal Golf & Racquet Club (Robber's Row course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1967

Port Royal Golf & Racquet Club (Robber's Row course): located on the northwestern point of Hilton Head Island, Port Royal is home to two championship golf courses ... Robber's Row and Barony. There was previously a third, Planter's Row, which closed in 2016 following extensive damage to the course inflicted by Hurricane Matthew.

Arguably the best of the Port Royal resort courses, the original George Cobb & Willard Byrd layout was significantly redesigned in 1994 by the incomparable Pete Dye.

Sitting atop former Civil War grounds, this out-and-back layout includes many enjoyable golf holes cut through stands of magnolia and oak trees. The generally good-width fairways (they tighten up from time-to-time!) lead to tricky greens that are well defended by Pete Dye's bunker improvements. Water also plays its part alongside several holes.

Did you know?

The former Planter's Row course at Port Royal (32.217048, -80.695975) was forced to close after it sustained devastating damage from Hurricane Matthew in 2016. Previously it had hosted a PGA Seniors Tour event, the Hilton Head Seniors International in 1985.

Designed by William Byrd and opened in 1984, Planter's Row was the youngest of the Port Royal trio. It provided a pleasant layout in a more tree-lined setting than the other Port Royal courses, and was known for having some of the tightest fairways on Hilton Head Island.

Port Royal is a member of the Virginia-based Heritage Golf Group. The Heritage Collection includes several top rated golf properties in California, Texas, Georgia, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina and South Carolina. Heritage Group properties on Hilton Head Island include the courses at Palmetto Hall, Oyster Reef, Port Royal and Shipyard.
