Patriots Point
Patriots Point Golf Links: Located just across the new Arthur Ravenel bridge from historic downtown Charleston, Patriots Point is home to a very playable and enjoyable golf course. A championship layout that offers many stunning views, especially on the closing stretch.
Located on Charleston Harbor's shoreline, the Patriot's two out-and-back, nine-hole loops are relatively flat and open. There is always the chance to card a good score here, provided you stay out of the many water hazards, and providing the wind is not blowing too fiercely.
The good-width fairways and short semi-rough should make ball-finding relatively easy if you are wayward; if you are really wayward, an adjoining fairway might just come to your rescue. A lightish sprinkling of palms, oaks and some willows, lend an extra touch of definition to what is otherwise a distinctly open environment.
The back-nine has the more interesting, scenic and wind-exposed holes. After coming through the only semi tree-lined section of the course at the par-3 14th and par-4 15th, the superb closing stretch really takes off.
The par-4 16th, played alongside the Cooper River, has a tough approach across water to find the safety of the green. Spectacular vistas onto Charleston Harbor are the hallmark of the wonderful short island-green par-3 17th and the relatively tight par-5 18th. Both holes are played on the shoreline; the closing hole finishing with a heavily bunker-defended green.
