Little River Golf & Resort: GOLF COURSE CLOSED IN 2020. Although the golf course closed in 2020 (not sure if and when it will reopen), the condo rental accommodation, much used by visiting golf groups to Pinehurst, remains open.
[Original Where2Golf description]: Little River Golf & Resort is home to a golf course comprising two very contrasting nine-hole loops, perhaps as contrasting as the comments you'll get from its many fans and those less convinced about its appeal. Much of that appeal comes from the absence of any housing around the course, combined with the uniquely rural openness of the front-nine, and the contrasting back-nine, with its more undulating and wooded feel.
Throughout the round, Dan Maples has ensured your game is probed and challenged with a wonderful variety of well-designed holes. Many are characterised by not overly wide fairways (especially in the tree-lined sections), substantial, high-lipped bunkering and large, undulating greens.
A small creek from the Little River meanders its way around parts of the relatively open front-nine, where ponds and wetland areas also skirt the generally good width fairways. The front-nine's linksy openness may provide a welcome change from the tree-lined character of so many Pinehurst courses.
On Little River's back-nine you'll return to that mainly tree-lined environment, in an area of undulating terrain, where small lakes (at different elevation levels) make their presence felt. Two tough shots on the back-nine come at the highest part of the course; the par-3 16th requires a tee-to-green carry over water, and then at the very scenic, downhill par-5 17th a knee-tremblingly tight tee-shot has to be made.
The closing hole leads you back up to the stable-block and a reminder of Little River's equestrian heritage. Immaculate conditioning may not be the most telling feature of Little River's set-up, but purists might say, "and rightly so!"
