Kiawah Is. (Oak Point)
Kiawah Island Golf Resort (Oak Point course): Oak Point sits on the opposite bank of the Kiawah River from the other Kiawah Island courses. Although accessed before you arrive on Kiawah Island itself, the course is very much part of the Kiawah Island family, benefitting from the same high standards of maintenance and presentation.
Laid out on the gently undulating terrain of a former cotton and indigo plantation, the course contains plenty of variety, with several tree-lined holes and others in a more open aspect. At the close of each nine-hole loop, you'll enjoy wonderful views onto Haulover Creek and the expansive marshlands of the Kiawah River.
Residential properties are more noticeable here than on the other Kiawah courses, with fewer trees screening them, but rarely are they "in play". Water hazards and marshland, sometimes clearly visible from the tees and fairways, other times less so, are very much in play on several holes. It helps to take a course guide/yardage book on your first outing.
Oak Point's closing stretch is well worth waiting for. The par-3 15th is a continuation of an excellent collection of five well-bunkered and water-protected par-3s. The long straight heavily bunkered 17th is the fifth of the five par-5s, with water threatening on the left from the tee.
However, it's the terrific par-4 18th that steals the show. This wonderful closing hole is played alongside the expansive marshland of the Kiawah River, with the marsh cutting in twice, once across the fairway and again in front of the green.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.

Oak Point was built on the grounds of an old Indigo plantation. (Indigo is a tropical plant from which a dark blue dye is extracted, formerly much used in the production of ink).
The Sanctuary Hotel provides luxury resort accommodation, and is the hub location of the Kiawah Island Resort. Previously this role was played by the Kiawah Resort Inn (now demolished), which was located in the West Beach area of the island, close to the Cougar Point clubhouse.
