Rancho Mirage Resort
Westin Rancho Mirage Resort (formerly Westin Mission Hills) Pete Dye Resort course: located directly behind the impressive resort hotel, the Pete Dye Resort course is another of the great man's excellently crafted designs. It plays a fraction shorter than its former stablemate, the now separate Mission Hills North Gary Player course (located a mile away).
Don't be lulled into thinking that the relatively straightforward opening pair of par-4s, with their beautiful views onto the San Jacinto mountains, herald an easy-going and leisurely round on this Pete Dye design. Although a resort course by name, Dye has woven plenty of golfing challenges into the relatively open and nicely undulating fabric of this skilfully designed layout.
Although water is used more sparingly than on many other Pete Dye designs, it does threaten on four or five occasions, making the drives at the par-5 5th and par-4 18th, and the approach shots to 7, 8, 14 and 18 particularly testing. The wonderful par-3 8th is a fine example of a trademark Pete Dye hole; railway sleepers line the water hazard, which unnervingly extends from the tee-box right across to the angled green.
The often large, elevated and sloping greens, are usually surrounded by excellent mounding, bunkering and clinging grass, ensuring your short game will be thoroughly examined. Beyond the good-width fairways and not overly penal rough, many holes are flanked by single-storey housing, while attractive palm trees stand behind many greens - accentuating the resort-style ambience of this excellent golf course.

Mission Hills, which was formerly the name of this Rancho Mirage resort, refers to a suburban community in the San Fernando Valley, in the northern suburbs of Los Angeles. The community is home to the Mission San Fernando Rey de España (Mission of Saint Ferdinand, King of Spain) and the Andrés Pico Adobe, the second oldest residence still standing in Los Angeles.
