Coral Mountain
Coral Mountain Golf Club (formerly The Golf Club at La Quinta, and before that Trilogy at La Quinta): located at the most southerly end of the Coachella Valley's unique array of top-quality golf course, this very good Gary Panks-design will test and challenge players of all skill levels.
Relatively flat desert terrain has been transformed into a well-groomed and grassy layout, with only occasional hints of the original desert wilderness remaining. The holes weave their way, individually or sometimes in pairs, through a residential development, generally with a buffer of desert scrub separating the course from the houses.
Good-width fairways and not overly penal rough create an inviting scene from the tee, especially with most holes also complemented by wonderful views onto the nearby Santa Rosa mountains.
Although there are no major elevation changes, the back-nine arguably has the more interesting holes, characterised by nicely elevated greens, gently undulating fairways and more water in play. The Trilogy's testing closing stretch, includes the dangerously water flanked par-5 16th, followed by the long par-3 17th, where a tee-to-green carry over water is required.
Perhaps not the most dramatic layout in the Valley, but this well-presented golf course certainly has its charms and challenges - and plenty of memorable mountain views.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
