3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1995

The Legends Golf Club at Temeku Hills (formerly Temeku Hills Golf & Country Club): Two well designed loops of nine holes, weave their way over gently undulating terrain at this resort style golf course in the heart of Temecula.

Although housing lines many of the holes, sometimes on both sides, the real estate is usually set far enough back not to be in harm's way, unless you are especially wayward, or the wind is blowing strongly. The generally good-width, rolling fairways, are occasionally flanked by bunkers built into some of the earthmounds. Water hazards only threaten four or five of the greens, but make for some tough approach shots, especially at the snaking par-5 5th, excellent short par-4 8th and the par-5 18th. This closing hole is also the best looking and most bunkered hole on the course.

As on many a Ted Robinson design, a horseshoe of palm trees provides a backdrop to almost all the greens, while beyond the course (and its perimeter housing) you can catch some pleasant views onto surrounding hills, especially from the layout's higher elevations.

Although the overall maintenance conditions are not likely to win major awards, Temeku Hills presents an enjoyable and nicely varied layout, a good mix of straight-away and dog-legging holes, with constant elevation changes always adding to the golfing challenge.

Did you know?

The Temecula Valley (Exva Temeeku) was inhabited by the Temecula Indians (Temeekuyam) for many thousands of years before their first encounters with the Spanish missionaries. Located at the "place of the sun" (Temeekunga), where "the sun breaks through the mist", the rapidly expanding city of Temecula is one of a handful in California that still retains its original Indian name.
