Singing Hills Golf Resort (Willow Glen course)

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1953

Singing Hills Golf Resort (Willow Glen course): Formerly called Sycuan Resort and before that Singing Hills Country Club, the extensive facilities at Singing Hills include the enjoyable Oak Glen and Willow Glen championship golf courses, and the also 18-hole Pine Glen par-3 course. These popular and well-maintained layouts may not be San Diego's longest or most demanding, but they offer relatively easy-going, easy-walking outings in a pleasantly natural parkland setting.

The Willow Glen course is an out-and-back layout, mainly played away from the clubhouse behind a small range of hills. Nestling down in the glen (Scottish for narrow valley), boulder-clad hills and a limited amount of real estate flank the course on either side. Within its pleasantly natural, parkland setting, the course is home to a liberal scattering of oak, pine, eucalyptus and plane trees, which give good definition to the often tightish fairways.

The excellent par-4 4th and par-4 14th and 15th holes incorporate the only real elevation changes on an otherwise relatively flat and uncontoured layout. The Sweetwater River and three or four small ponds ensure that water hazards pose a threat on several occasions, not least at the par-3 12th, the best hole on the course. This very attractive short hole (186 yards from the back tees) has water from tee-to-green and a picturesque waterfall adorns the rightside of the putting surface.

With on-site accommodations and a casino close at hand, Sycuan is an excellent stay and play location, and a great springboard from which to discover some of San Diego's more demanding golf tracks.
