Steele Canyon Golf Club: Located in the rolling hills and rugged canyons to the east of San Diego, three distinctly different nines await the golfer at Steele Canyon. The best combination is based on the Canyon and Ranch nines, although the Meadow-nine is not without its own challenges.

Scenically the Canyon-nine is breathtaking, climbing as it does into two separate and fabulously natural canyons. The dramatic elevation changes provide spectacular golf and equally spectacular views. Boulder and bush-clad hills line your route beyond the generally good-width fairways, which lead you either up or downhill towards often well-bunkered greens. Heavily "pot-bunkered" would be an apt description of the dramatically plunging downhill par-3 5th and the wonderful ravine-crossing par-3 7th.

Elevation changes are still much in evidence as you start out on the Ranch-nine, with a spectacular downhill tee-shot at the par-4 3rd creating one of Steele Canyon's most memorable holes. Not to diminish the excitement, the closing stretch of the Ranch-nine, although much flatter, takes you on an enlightening circumnavigation of a working ranch (the Ivanhoe Stock Farm), before bringing you back to the clubhouse via a dangerously water-protected par-5.

Completing the trio, the flatter Meadow-nine drifts alongside open pastures and residential housing. It too has plenty of golfing challenges lying in wait, although with a good deal less drama than on the other two very impressive nines.

Did you know?

Steel Canyon is located in the heart of San Diego County, an area that has long been inhabited by the Kumeyaay Native American people. The first European to visit the region was Portuguese-born explorer Juan Rodrigues Cabrillo, sailing under the Spanish flag.

In 1602, Sebastián Vizcaíno started to map the coast of California. Vizcaíno surveyed the harbour and what are now Mission Bay and Point Loma and named these areas after the Catholic Saint Didacus, a Spaniard more commonly known as San Diego. In 1769, Gaspar de Portolà established the Presidio of San Diego (a military post) overlooking the Old Town. Around the same time, Mission San Diego de Alcalá was founded by Franciscan friars under Father Junípero Serra.
