San Francisco GC
San Francisco Golf Club: This most traditional of private golf clubs is home to one of California's finest golf courses. Albert W. Tillinghast's highly-rated design is routinely included in world Top 100 ranking lists, and in the top 50 of America's greatest courses.
The layout is at times relatively open, at others more tree-lined. A plethora of stylish bunkering lines the fairways and typically surrounds the not overly large, lightning fast greens. Devoid of water hazards, there are plenty of other golfing challenges that ensure Tillinghast's design gives every part of your game a thorough workout.
Unlike its near neighbour, The Olympic Club, here you'll feel there's a bit more space to play with, and fewer trees narrowing things down from the tee. Amongst the elevation changes, the memorable par-3 7th plays downhill to a staunchly bunker-defended green.
Limited access: this private course is generally playable only by members and their invited guests.
Private club; guests may only play if hosted by a member.
Caddies compulsory.
Good
The course at San Francisco Golf Club was designed by one of America's legendary golf course architects, Albert Warren Tillinghast. Born in Philadelphia in 1874, "Tilly" was the son of Benjamin Collins Tillinghast, the owner of a rubber goods company. Many would argue this Californian course is Tillinghast's best design. Others have his "best" on the other side of the United States, at Bethpage in New York.
Tillinghast-designed courses, such as Baltusrol, Bethpage, San Francisco and Winged Foot, have hosted countless top-level professional golf events. Whereas the "East Coast" courses mentioned above have each held a profusion of major championships, the headline event at San Francisco GC was the 1974 Curtis Cup, in which the USA's top eight amateur women beat their Gt Britain & Ireland opponents by 13 pts to 5.
California's 5th best course (Golf Digest, 2023/24).
USA's 33rd best course (Golf Digest, 2023).
World's 38th best course (GOLF Magazine, 2023/24).
124th US Open: the No.2 Course at Pinehurst once again plays host to this most illustrious championship (June 13-16). Wyndham Clark defends his title, having won at Los Angeles CC in 2023.
79th Women’s US Open: the second women’s major championship of the season gets underway at Lancaster CC in Pennsylvania. It’s the second time the championship has been held here.
(May 30-June 2).
Nelly Korda: won the Mizuho Americas Open (May 16-19) at Liberty National GC, continuing her extraordinary form in LPGA events. This was her sixth win in seven starts in 2024.
Xander Schauffele: recorded his first major championship win, and second record-equalling low score of 62 in a major. Only he, Branden Grace, Rickie Fowler and Shane Lowry have achieved this feat in a men’s major championship.
Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: With a clubhouse that might befit a Roman Emperor, and a golf course to match, you can be sure of a memorable outing at Rome's most talked about golf facility.
Jim Fazio's original layout was much changed to create a modern Ryder Cup course ... now one of the Eternal City's (and Italy's) most revered.
