Rustic Canyon
Rustic Canyon Golf Club: Far from the madding crowd, and well away from any housing development, Rustic Canyon is a wonderfully scenic golf course that makes excellent use of its varied terrain.
The front-nine is relatively flat, bordered by gentle ridges of picturesque hills. A wide creek washes alongside and through several of the holes. Exuding many links-like qualities, the look and feel of the layout is not unlike the gently undulating, ranch-style courses of southern Australia. Wide expanses of grassland and river-wash areas separate the holes, while generously wide fairways, sometimes super-sized, will be a delight to big-hitters.
It's around the greens where you will be tested the most. The often large and mercurially sloping putting surfaces are often surrounded by grass not much longer than found on the greens themselves. You frequently get the chance to demonstrate your chip-and-run game, as well as putting from long range. Plenty of jagged-edged bunkering ensures the course lives up to its Rustic billing.
The true splendour of the Canyon setting comes alive particularly on the wonderfully scenic back-nine. As you head further into the valley, starting at the par-5 10th, you will enjoy greater elevation changes than on the flatter front-nine, and the best of the canyon scenery. Each hole offers a different perspective onto the surrounding hills. The tee of the par-4 16th, the highest point on the course, provides one of the best views back down the valley.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.

Rustic Canyon, located just north-west of the Simi Valley, is sitauted in the early foothills of the Santa Susana Mountains. The range runs east-west separating the San Fernando and Simi Valleys to the south, from the Santa Clarita and Santa Clara River Valleys to the north.
Pico Canyon, in the north-east of the range, was home to the first oil discovery in California. In 1876, Charles Mentry brought in California's first commercially viable oil well. His Pico oil works were eventually folded into John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil Co. of California (Chevron).
Production from the well didn't stop until 1990, making the 114-year old Pico No.4 the longest continually producing oil well in the world. Today the well is a National Historic Landmark. The neighbouring town of Mentryville is maintained as an oil "ghost town".
California's 52nd best course in California (Golf Digest, 2023/24).
