Rio Secco Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1997

Rio Secco Golf Club: This excellent and often dramatic Rees Jones designed golf course guarantees variety. Six holes weave their way through a canyon, six are perched atop a plateau and six run through the bed of a dry river (rio secco in Spanish).

Not only is there variety here, but also many spectacularly crafted holes and stunning views across Las Vegas, down to the famous Strip and away to the Spring Mountains in the west. The sizable housing around parts of the course is kept well out of harm's way, allowing you to concentrate on hitting the tightish fairways, which are usually bordered by mounding and not overly penal rough.

Stray too far offline and you'll discover plenty of small black rocks in the desert terrain, a residue from volcanic activity millions of years ago, and the reason these hills to the south of Las Vegas are called the Black Mountain range. An attractive mix of pot bunkers and more sprawling sand traps will need to be avoided as you journey round this excellent layout.

Among many attractive holes, the par-3 15th and par-4 16th are most definitely Rio Secco's pair of aces. The 15th green nestles in a rocky enclave, a single large open-mouthed bunker awaiting anything hit short and left. The 16th green is impressively surrounded on three sides by rocky cliffs; a hole where nature did most of the work and Rees Jones added the finishing touches. The same could also be said of the par-3 3rd, where a deep canyon must be crossed between tee and green.
