PGA West (Dye Stadium)
PGA West Pete Dye Stadium course: Perhaps no other golf architect can call on such a repertoire of design ideas and golf course defences as Pete Dye. Here at PGA West's Stadium course he seems to have deployed them all, making this one of the toughest layouts around; a worthy venue for the many top level professional tournaments it has hosted. Classic Peter Dye at his most challenging best.
What was once essentially flat terrain, has been shaped and sculpted into a challenging and undulating course. Eight lakes and ponds ensure that several greens and fairways are tightly flanked by water hazards. If water is not present, ominously large bunkers and desert waste areas will be. Whether you hit the generally good-width fairways or not, scoring well will depend on your ability to avoid the mountainous earthmoundng and deep, expansive bunkering that surrounds many greens.
On the par-5 16th, aptly named San Andreas Fault, the left-hand greenside bunker is probably as deep and expansive as anything you've ever seen. Survive that, and the next demand is to hit the island green at the par-3 17th, just the small green and a solitary pot bunker to aim at in the middle of a scenically rock-strewn lake.
It could be that the severe (and occasionally railway-sleepered) bunkering, frequent water hazards and mysteriously sloping greens are all conspiring to rack up your score. Time to step-back, admire the colourful bougainvillea and soak-up the wonderful mountain scenery that backdrops many holes.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance.
Non-metal spike facility. Golf carts compulsory.
