PGA West (Dye Mountain)
PGA West Pete Dye Mountain course at La Quinta: Few courses in the Coachella Valley can boast a closing stretch of holes as stunning as those found on La Quinta's Mountain course. There are few courses in the world that possess a par-3 as fabulous as the Mountain's 16th.
The open, gently undulating terrain of the front-nine provides some hints of what's to come later in the round, with the dog-legging par-5 4th, stunning par-3 5th and water-flanked par-4 6th, all getting you right alongside the base of the Santa Rosa mountains. Pete Dye's probing and challenging design will require good-quality driving and accurate approach work to avoid the combination of expansive bunkering and small mischievous pot bunkers around the greens.
As you head out on the back-nine, the first four holes bring you, for the first time, into a more residential area. Although this is the least dramatic stretch of the course, the holes are still top-quality, with the housing set well back from the good-width, palm-fringed fairways. From this residential setting, you are quickly transported into a spectacular natural canyon, where the uphill par-4 14th and downhill par-5 15th signal your arrival into golfing nirvana.
The 16th on La Quinta's Mountain Course is as scenic a par-3 as you can find in a mountain-desert setting. Played downhill to a raised, bunker-surrounded green, the target looks unnervingly small against the majestic desert backdrop. The par-4 17th continues to hug the base of the mountains before the turn for home at the par-5 18th and a chance to reflect on that most dazzling of closing stretches.
