PGA West (Nicklaus Tournmt)
PGA West Jack Nicklaus Tournament course (also known as PGA West Nicklaus Resort course): Like its neighbour, the Pete Dye designed Stadium course, Jack Nicklaus's Tournament course is yet another of the sparkling jewels in the PGA West/La Quinta crown.
Laid out in two nine-hole loops, the course roams its way through some of PGA West's residential properties, although the housing never seems to be that intrusive. The rivers of sand skirting many fairways and wonderful views onto the Santa Rosa mountains provide frequent reminders of the area's rugged desert origins.
Rolling earthmounds along the tightish fairways, Nicklaus's excellent bunkering and several seriously threatening water hazards combine to ensure all facets of your game are thoroughly tested. Water is more sparingly used than on many Nicklaus designs; you'll be glad it appears on only six of the eighteen holes.
The mischievous par-3 8th requires a tee-to-green carry across a small lake, while the aptly named par-4 9th (Jack's Revenge) is spectacularly framed by a mountain backdrop; a good-size lake will be uppermost in your mind on your approach to the huge two-tier green. This expansive putting surface also doubles-up to serve the long and water-flanked par-4 18th, an imposing hole named the Bear Trap. At the par-5 15th hitting the island-green in two will require a second shot of prodigious skill, length and luck!
Nicklaus's expert contouring and mounding of the terrain removes any notion that this is a "flat" course. The stylish bunkering, water hazards and array of trees along the fairways create an always enjoyable, scenic and challenging layout.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance.
Non-metal spike facility. Golf carts compulsory.
