PGA West Greg Norman course

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 2000

PGA West Greg Norman course: PGA West's stable of star-studded courses includes this challenging Greg Norman design, laid out in true desert tradition. Although routed through a residential development, it is natural sandy waste areas, attractively adorned with all manner of desert flora, that lie in wait for anything hit too wayward from the tee.

The housing is barely noticeable as you journey around this excellently presented course. Many holes will feel a bit tight from the tee, as they weave their way through the attractive desert terrain. Around the greens and along many fairways, deep high-lipped dish-shaped bunkers reinforce the course's stylish appearance, while the stunning Santa Rosa mountains provide a wonderful backdrop to many holes.

Water hazards threaten on a handful of holes, especially at three of the par-3s where small lakes dangerously flank one side of the green. The par-3 13th is a fabulously testing combination of length, water, sand and a prodigiously sloping green (as many others are!).

Backing up your straight driving, your approach work and short game will need to be on song. Occasional wash areas cut in front of some greens, while most are defended by smooth run-offs, or thickish grassy rough and plenty of those menacing bunkers. Although far removed from the ocean, this is a golf course where you may well experience a few "shark bites" on your way round.
