Oak Creek Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1996

Oak Creek Golf Club: Laid out in what was formerly one of Orange County's many orange groves, Oak Creek is now one its best championship golf courses. The wonderfully natural feel to this excellent Tom Fazio layout is due in part to the ever-present views of the Saddleback Mountains, as well as an absence of housing.

Plenty of trees, bushes and shrubs have matured around the course, while also creating a distinctly wooded perimeter to screen out the world beyond. The good-width, lightly tree-lined fairways ensure you don't feel too "crowded" from the tee, but you'll need to steer your drives and approach shots between a multitude of stylish and often sprawling bunkers. A veritable river of sand awaits at the short par-4 7th (Crescent Moon). The closer you get to the greens, the more Fazio ups the ante to test your full repertoire of shots.

Although there are no dramatic elevation changes along the way, the layout maintains a pleasantly undulating, rolling character. Most of the water hazards are saved for the back-nine, with the green of the picturesque par-3 12th (Brady's Pond) jutting out into a small, ribbon-like lake. The rightside of the par-4 14th is also threatened by this same lake, while Oak Creek itself dangerously borders the long par-5 15th, from tee-to-green.

Although the middle section of the front-nine is played on the other side of a railway track, this momentary reminder of the outside world does not interrupt the flow and harmony of this attractive, excellently maintained and very enjoyable golf course.

Did you know?

Like nearby Pelican Hill (Ocean North and Ocean South courses), Oak Creek is owned and managed by The Irvine Company. >> The golf course is laid out in the Santa Ana valley, approximately 10 miles inland from Pelican Hill, and enjoys many views onto the Saddleback Mountains, away to the east. Sometimes called Old Saddleback, the saddle-like ridge is formed by the two highest peaks in the Santa Ana Mountain range. Santiago Peak is the highest peak in the range and highest point in Orange County at 5,687 feet (1,733 m). Modjeska Peak is the second highest at 5,496 feet (1,675 m). Old Saddleback forms part of the border between the neighbouring Orange and Riverside Counties.
