4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Mt Woodson Golf Club: The layout might only weigh-in at 6000-yards with a par of 70, but Mt Woodson is also one of the most dramatic and naturally beautiful golf courses around San Diego. Located amidst the hills and slopes of boulder-clad Mount Woodson, this challenging course is a tribute to the design skills of Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley.

Many wind-sculpted boulder formations, ancient oaks and occasional wetland areas are key ingredients in this immensely scenic and natural golfing environment. The fairways, often challengingly tight, make full use of the constantly undulating terrain, which also ensures an abundance of spectacular views along the way.

The lengthy boardwalk drive from the par-4 2nd (Razor's Edge) around to the fabulous par-3 3rd (Ledges) is just one of many highlights, and may have you thinking that Jurassic Park is just around the next corner.

All manner of trouble lurks beside the greens, with thick grassy mounds, good bunkering and a water hazard or two, all potentially threatening. Played at a slightly higher elevation than the front-nine, the back-nine culminates with breathtaking views from the par-4 17th hole; boulder-strewn and partly wooded hills stretch away into the distance, eventually joining up with some of southern California's highest mountain ranges.

Tricky at the best of times (some would say quirky!), downright brutal if the wind is blowing hard, Mt Woodson is one of many golfing gems to be found within a short drive from San Diego.

Note: In recent times its been tough for many golf courses in drought-prone southern California. Presentation standards have tended to fluctuate as the weather dictates.

Did you know?

Within the estate now owned by Mt Woodson Golf Club you can visit Mount Woodson Castle (which is next to the clubhouse). Taking over five years to build, Amy Irene Strong completed this structure in 1921. The unique craftsman-style 12,000-square-foot dwelling was originally designed by Strong herself, a prominent San Diego socialite and dress designer.

Owned by many throughout the years, it now serves as a frequent site for weddings and special events. Also known as the Amy Strong Castle, the building is also used as an administration office and can be viewed during operating hours.

Woodson Mountain is also well-known to San Diego's adventure seekers as an important destination for climbers, mountain-bikers and hikers.
