Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon (Legends course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 2000

Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon (Legends course): The intriguingly named Morongo at Tukwet Canyon, was formerly known as East Valley Golf Club. It is still where you will enjoy two top-quality championship golf courses (The Champions and The Legends), as well as being the home of the Southern California PGA.

The Legends honoured at each hole on this layout are nine European Ryder Cup stalwarts on the outward holes, and nine USA Ryder cuppers on the inward half. The golf course lays down a golfing challenge they would all relish.

This out-and-back, linksy design, crafted by Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley, contains a wonderful array of golfing challenges as well as impressive views onto neighbouring hills and the distant San Gorgonio and San Jacinto mountains.

The undulating terrain, weaves its way through large bush-covered "dunes", giving excellent definition to each hole, while the generally good-width, rolling fairways provide sufficient space from the tee. Substantive clusters of bunkers lie in wait on many holes, not least at the exquisite par-3 4th, played across a yawning ravine. Around the large and sloping greens yet more stylish bunkering will account for anything hit offline.

In the lower, middle section of the course the vegetation and tree-line increases, before you return to linksy, dune-like openness from the par-4 13th onward. Although water hazards are rarely in play, take care at the long par-4 18th, where a small lake fiercely protects the right side of the hole from tee to green.

Preparations seem to be in hand to introduce a few more housing plots along some stretches of the course, although these should not intrude too much on this otherwise very natural and enjoyable layout.

Formerly called the PGA of Southern California Golf Club, and then the East Valley Golf Club, the now named Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon remains the home of the Southern California PGA.

The Legends course honours the names of Ryder Cup legends. The front-nine has holes named after some of the European greats, Faldo, Jacklin, Montgomerie, Langer and Woosnam among them, and of course the founder himself, Samuel Ryder. On the back-nine top-performers from many winning USA teams are featured, not least Palmer, Watson, Kite, Casper, Wadkins and Irwin.
