Morongo at Tukwet (Champions)
Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon (Champions course): The intriguingly named Morongo at Tukwet Canyon, was formerly known as East Valley Golf Club. It is still where you will enjoy two top-quality championship golf courses (The Champions and The Legends), as well as being the home of the Southern California PGA.
The Champions layout, like its companion, provides many stunning views onto the surrounding hills and more distant scenery of the San Gorgonio and San Jacinto mountain ranges. With all the holes named after former US PGA Champions, the two well-maintained out-and-back loops take you on a scenic journey that embraces a mix of natural and residential environments.
Especially on the front-nine, the tightly folding, bush-covered hills of this area provide an undulating and scenic setting for many of the holes, while on the back-nine real estate is more in evidence, although not intrusively so.
Perhaps a little wider and more forgiving than those on the Legends course, the rolling fairways are nicely bunkered, and occasionally crossed by dry creeks. The par-5 4th is notably split in two by a creek, which can be crossed twice, or perhaps just once for risk-taking big hitters.
Around the large, seriously undulating and often elevated greens, your short game and putting skills will be thoroughly tested. The Champions course, like the Legends, is home to many challenging and exciting golf holes, most of them retaining a pleasantly natural feel, without the housing intruding too much into the picture.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance.
Non-metal spike facility. Walking permitted at certain times.
Excellent
Formerly called the PGA of Southern California Golf Club, and then the East Valley Golf Club, the now named Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon remains the home of the Southern California PGA.
The Champions course honours the names of past US PGA Champions; 17 of the 18 honourees won the title on at least two occasions. The front-nine includes US PGA champions who lifted the prestigious Wanamaker Trophy in the years up to 1961, the back-nine takes up the roll of honour from 1962 onward.
