La Purisima Golf Course

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1986

La Purisima Golf Course: Talk to any Californian golfer about some of the State's lesser known gems, and La Purisima will be somewhere close to the top of the list. Located close to an historic Spanish mission (see Did You Know section below) this is a gloriously natural and scenic layout that will thoroughly test your golf and thrill the senses.

Laid out on beautifully rolling, open countryside in the Santa Rita hills, the course is full of variety and skilfully designed golf holes. At times more open, at others more tree-lined, the generally good-width fairways and not overly penal rough provide enough space to "hit long" off the tee, but be careful on those occasions when the course tightens up, as it clearly does on the closing stretch.

The surrounding environment, especially in the "greener" winter and spring months, is not unlike that found in the Scottish glens, where pine and oaks are liberally scattered around the wonderfully picturesque, grass-covered hills. Real estate is nowhere to be seen. On this excellent layout, judging the many elevation changes is one secret to good scoring; staying out of the plentiful greenside and fairway bunkering, and not infrequent water hazards, will also serve your cause well.

A local nickname for the course, "La Piranha" seems a bit harsh, given its undoubted beauty and style. However, if the wind is blowing or your game is having one of its wayward days, then the course's sharper teeth may well be exposed, and La Piranha's bite may assuredly be felt.

Did you know?

La Purisima was developed by oil man and golf courses developer Kenneth "Ken" Hume Hunter (1944-2020), who was also responsible for two other excellent golf developments in the California Central Coast area ... Hunter Ranch in Paso Robles (1994) and Sandpiper near Goleta (1972).

Just two miles along the road from the golf club and well worth a visit, is the La Purisima Mission State Historic Park. La Purisima Mission was the eleventh of the twenty-one missions established by the Spanish, in what was later to become California. Mision La Purisima Concepcion de Maria Santisima (in English, the Mission of the Immaculate Conception of Most Holy Mary) was founded in 1787 by Franciscan Padre Presidente Fermin Francisco Lasuen.

La Purisima is located in the Santa Rita hills in the Santa Ynez valley. The Santa Rita Hills is one of California's most important wine appellations, with its Pinot Noir wines ranking alongside some of the world's best.

The nearby city of Lompoc is much more an agricultural centre and working town than a tourist stop-over. It also gains notoriety by having a US Penitentiary (prison) just outside of town. About 15 miles east of the golf course is the charming Danish town of Solvang, definitely one that's on the tourist map.
