Half Moon Bay (Old)
Half Moon Bay Golf Links (The Old course): Located alongside the Pacific Ocean, adjacent to the Ritz-Carlton hotel, Half Moon Bay offers two distinctly different golfing options. The parkland-style Old Course has been a popular layout for many years, while links golf aficionados will savour the newer Ocean Course, which emulates the coastal offerings of Britain and Ireland.
Substantially longer than its sibling, the more inland Old Course impressively weaves its way through residential properties, before delivering a fabulous oceanside surprise at the end. Many pines and cypress trees, as well as good bunkering, give good definition to the gently undulating fairways as they progress around the anti-clockwise first-nine loop. Although properties skirt each side of many holes, they are generally well out of harm's way from stray shots.
The back-nine feels a little more open than the front, with the holes mainly laid out in pairs, one heading out, the other back. Plenty of water hazards, greater elevation changes and a few tighter fairways create a more interesting back-nine. Nothing however in the build-up will prepare you for the Old Course's majestic closing duo.
Pick of the holes: a wonderful ocean-view green at the par-3 17th is followed by the Old course's stunning closing par-4 18th. Perched on top of the cliffs, directly above the Pacific Ocean, you play downhill from the tee, across a creek and uphill to an elevated green, which sits beside the terrace of the impressive Ritz-Carlton hotel. Although one hole doesn't make a golf course, the 18th on the Old Course is one of the most scenic and exhilarating holes in California - not to be missed!
