The Golf Club at Copper Valley (formerly Saddle Creek Golf Resort): Located in a master-planned community, but not at all impacted by housing, this very natural, scenic and challenging layout provides visitors with an excellent golfing stop-over if you are heading out to Yosemite National Park.

Laid out in two expansive nine-hole loops, the well-maintained course is at times open, at others more tree-lined, and occupies pleasantly undulating terrain. Occasionally the elevation changes are more pronounced. Several tightish tee shots will need to find their way down avenues of small oak trees, and past plenty of grass-topped bunkers. Also to be avoided are many neatly trimmed bunkers that guard the top-quality, large, undulating greens.

With water hazards dangerously threatening on about half the holes (more so on the back-nine), your overall course management and shot-making will need to be on song to score well here. Presenting a haven of peace and tranquillity, far removed from the hustle and bustle of city life, Copper Valley provides picturesque views onto surrounding partly-wooded hills, which stretch away to the wonderful Sierra Nevada mountain range in the distance.

Pick of the holes: the long, uphill par-4 6th, the par-4 16th and the water-protected, downhill par-3 11th are three notables to look out for in this impressive collection of golf holes.

Although a 2-hour drive from the Bay Area, Copper Valley is ideally located as a stop-over on your way to and from Yosemite National Park. The Park is a stunning wilderness sanctuary of spectacular granite cliffs and domes (including El Capitan, Sentinel Rock and Half Dome), waterfalls, clear streams and giant Sequoia groves. Yosemite was a focal point in the development of the National Park concept, owing to the work of people like John Muir and Galen Clark.

Close to Copper Valley is the small town of Copperopolis. Unlike most mining towns in the area, Copperopolis' claim to fame was copper rather than gold. The town grew rapidly in the 1860s, fuelled by the need for copper during the American Civil War (1861-1865) to make bullets. The copper was sent to Stockton and then to San Francisco, where it was loaded onto ships and taken around Cape Horn before finally arriving in smelters on the East Coast.
