Deer Ridge Golf Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 2004

Deer Ridge Golf Club: GOLF COURSE PERMANENTLY CLOSED IN 2019, "due to financial conditions brought on by ever-increasing maintenance, operational cost and lower revenues".

[Original Where2Golf description]: Although shorter and slightly easier-going than its big brother on the opposite side of Balfour Rd (see Shadow Lakes), Deer Ridge also provides an enjoyable and challenging round of golf, with the best holes saved 'til last.

The layout comprises an expansive front-nine clockwise loop and an equally roaming, anti-clockwise back-nine. Both loops encircle and are flanked by plenty of housing, which is usually well out of harm's way, perched on ridges above the course.

On both nines, several holes follow the lines of various creeks and wetland areas that run through the property. Deer Creek dangerously threatens the middle section of the front-nine, bordering the par-4 5th and dangerously slicing through the par-4 6th and par-3 7th holes. The par-5 9th and par-4 11th are dissected by Dry Creek which will need to be crossed en route to the respective greens.

The most natural and scenic stretch comes at the end, starting out from the long, downhill par-3 15th. Another elevated tee-box greets you at the glorious par-5 16th. The ensuing closing trio are laid out in a more or less straight line along the bottom of Briones Valley. This very natural and undeveloped grassy canyon, is accompanied by a creek, ponds and wetlands as it makes it way smoothly and gently down into the flat and wide expanse of the San Joaquin river delta. A fabulous finish to an enjoyable, well-presented, pleasantly undulating, though not overly long course.
