DarkHorse is located a few miles north of Auburn, a city known for its California Gold Rush history. In 1848 gold was discovered in Auburn Ravine by a group of French gold prospectors. The area soon became a mining camp, and was officially named Auburn in 1849. Auburn's "Old Town" is a popular tourist destination, with several buildings dating back to the mid-19th century gold rush era.
