We-Ko-Pa Golf Club (Cholla course)

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 2001

We-Ko-Pa Golf Club (Cholla course): when We-Ko-Pa's first of two layouts opened in 2001, it did so to excellent reviews. Golfers were thrilled by the Cholla's excellent layout, absence of invasive real estate and spectacular mountain views that framed every hole. All these characteristics still apply today.

Built on the Fort McDowell Yavapai Indian reservation, and subsequently joined by a second and equally impressive companion (the Saguaro course), the Cholla roams its way over a large area of pristine Sonoran desert. Cholla and saguaro cactuses (needless to say) are much in evidence beyond the good-width fairways.

On a first visit you might be forgiven for wanting a caddie or Indian guide to point out the driving line on some of the opening holes. However, as the immensely scenic layout unfolds, it will effortlessly draw you into its undoubted charms and challenges. The naturalness of the desert environment and magnificence of the views presents a picture to behold.

Maintenance and presentation standards are always top-class, ensuring that the greens are among the slickest you've putted on. Excellent bunkering adds to the course's overall aesthetics. With many pleasant elevation changes and a great variety of golfing challenges, We-Ko-Pa's Cholla course, like the newer Saguaro, delivers a great golf experience in the most natural of desert environments.

Did you know?

Part of a resort destination owned by the Fort McDowell Yavapai Indian Nation, the We-Ko-Pa golf club takes its name from a native Indian word meaning "Four Peaks Mountain". You'll have no difficulty spotting the four peaks from either of the two championship golf courses. Also visible, on the hour, is one of the world's highest water fountains, located in nearby Fountain Hills.

We-Ko-Pa's original golf course is named after the Cholla cactus, which in fact represents more than 20 species of the Opuntia genus. These cactus grow in all of the hot deserts of the American Southwest, with different species having adapted to different locale and elevation ranges.

Published ranking

Saguaro course:
Arizona's 23rd best course (Golf Digest, 2023/24).
Cholla course:
Arizona's 33rd best course (Golf Digest, 2023/24).
