Ventana Canyon (Mtn)
The Lodge at Ventana Canyon (Mountain course): Widely regarded as one of Arizona's finest public-access golf facilities, Ventana Canyon is home to two excellent desert-style layouts. Occupying pride of place in the centre of the resort, and bordered on both sides by the Canyon course, the Mountain course is a wonderfully natural desert layout, with limited housing flanking the holes.
The drama comes early on this wonderfully crafted layout. The short par-3 3rd, played at the highest point on the course, provides one of Arizona's legendary holes. Things continue strongly on the front-nine, so much so, that the back-nine may actually feel a little less spectacular, although the quality of golfing challenges laid down by Tom Fazio continue unabated.
Throughout, the views of the Santa Catalina mountains and desert plains are stunning. The fairways here are lush, and the greens well-defended by menacing bunkering, grassy mounds and occasionally water. It's well worth going out of your way to ensure Ventana Canyon is included in your Arizona golfing itinerary.
Pick of the holes: the fabulous par-3 3rd on Ventana Canyon's Mountain course, measuring only 107 yards from the back tees, is one of the most photographed golf holes in Arizona.
Stay&Play at Ventana Canyon: luxury onsite accommodation available, see Where2Stay section below.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends. The Canyon and Mountain courses alternate on a daily-basis between members-only and public access. Visitors cannot play Canyon and Mountain courses on same day.

Ventana Canyon nestles in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains, also known as the Catalina Mountains, or simply the Catalinas. They are named after St Catherine of Alexandria, who lived at the turn of the fourth century. The highest point in the Catalinas is Mt Lemmon, which climbs to a height of 9,157 feet (2,791 m) above sea level.
